The Enhanced Microbial Genomes Library
Since the obtention of the complete sequence of Haemophilus influenzae Rd in 1995, the number of bacterial genomes entirely sequenced has regularly increased. A problem is that the quality of the annotations of these very large sequences is usually lower than those of the shorter entries encountered in the repository collections. Moreover, classical sequence database management systems have dif...
متن کاملEMGLib: the Enhanced Microbial Genomes Library (update 2000)
As the number of complete microbial genomes publicly available is still growing, the problem of annotation quality in these very large sequences remains unsolved. Indeed, the number of annotations associated with complete genomes is usually lower than those of the shorter entries encountered in the repository collections. Moreover, classical sequence database management systems have difficultie...
متن کاملThe integrated microbial genomes (IMG) system
The integrated microbial genomes (IMG) system is a new data management and analysis platform for microbial genomes provided by the Joint Genome Institute (JGI). IMG contains both draft and complete JGI genomes integrated with other publicly available microbial genomes of all three domains of life. IMG provides tools and viewers for analyzing genomes, genes and functions, individually or in a co...
متن کاملThe Optical Mapping of Microbial Genomes
M icrobial genomes are being sequenced at a furious pace, helping us to build a detailed genetic picture of the microbial world. With more than 140 finished bacterial genomes now publicly available and others in progress, remarkable numbers of genomic sequences are serving as scientific touchstones for several communities. The establishment of large sequencing centers, employing ever-more-effic...
متن کاملMicrobial genomes: dealing with diversity.
We have now complete genome sequences of several pairs of closely related prokaryotes (conspecific strains or congeneric species). Surprisingly, even strains of the same species can differ by as much as 20% in gene content. Conceptual and methodological approaches for dealing with such diversity are now being developed, and should transform microbial genomics.
